Preparation Courses For Sailing Adventures

I recently completed an eight day charter in the Caribbean arranged by Pacific Yachting and Sailing. My crew of four and I sailed a couple of hundred miles in perfect weather on a 40 foot Moorings catamaran from Saint Lucia south to Grenada, and we had an absolute blast. Marc Kraft was the most helpful, honest business manager throughout the entire chartering process. I will definitely work with Marc and Pacific Yachting and Sailing on future charter adventures.

Just want you to know that the BVI charter with the Moorings and with your help was an excellent experience. In addition, all the sailing training that Connor received from PY&S allowed him to thoroughly enjoy and actively participate with the charter. Wonderful to see as his Dad. He wants to continue to learn from PY&S and earn his bareboat certification hopefully this summer.

Marc,

I just wanted to let you know that I had a great time during my maiden voyage in the BVI's over Thanksgiving. It was absolutely the best vacation me and my family have ever taken. Everything came off without a hitch. I chartered a 3 month old 40' Beneteau. I was totally comfortable and confident with skippering the boat thanks to the great training I received at Pacific Sailing. We had 15-20 knot winds and 4-5 ft seas for most of the week. We sailed from Tortola to Cooper, to Virgin Gorda (just couldn't bring myself to leave Saba Rock for a couple of days), then hit Foxy's at Jost van Dyke, to Peter Island, then back to Tortola. Dropped anchor one night at Peter Island and caught mooring balls the other nights. Going where you want, when you want, then snorkeling, fishing, taking the dinghy ashore and exploring is hard to beat. Can't believe I waited this long in my life to do it.

To prep for the trip, I had my wife take the introductory class at the sailing school 2 miles from my home. I went with her to get some time on the water working together. Let me just say that the quality of instruction and boats that you offer is far, far superior to what is available at my own backdoor. I could site a dozen examples off the top of my head but I'll leave them out for the sake of brevity. I'm really glad I got my bareboat certification at Pacific Sailing. Tell Frank and Ken they did a great job transferring their knowledge and enthusiasm for sailing.

Keep up the good work. Hope to see you back in Santa Cruz soon.

Take care,

Kent Perry

Marc,

I wanted to thank you for helping us get everything set up for our trip to Baja, Mexico.

The trip was excellent, it had a really nice blend of adventure and relaxation. The sailing was pretty good, the wind tended to blow in the morning and then drop off around 1 or 2 pretty quickly and then somewhat unfortunately pick back up again around 9 or so at night and could blow with some enthusiasm throughout the rest of the night. The anchorages were all pretty good, even though none of them were sheltered from the typical evening breeze, most were relatively well protected from any swell. We only had one bad night and it was unfortunately the first one out. Not knowing any better, our first thought was that our orientation guide was full of crap, but we later learned that everyone had a bad night that night and we might have fared better than others. Supposedly there were two competing low pressure systems creating all kinds of problems. We were well anchored and seemed to have stayed put though. Fortunately the next day took us to a beautiful and serene anchorage on Isla San Francisco, where we stayed the next two nights and recovered.

While sailing and exploring the islands we saw lots of wildlife. There was good snorkeling, whales in the distance, dolphins passing by and we even swam with sea lions. The sea lions were probably the highlight of the trip for me. The water was still a little on the cool side. I was fine swimming without a wetsuit when it was hot outside, but did put one on for longer snorkeling excursions. The weather was really nice, it was typically cool at night, usually comfortable (shorts and t-shirt) when the wind was blowing during the day and hot when it wasn't.

The scenery was very beautiful and we took a bunch of pictures, I've put a bunch of them up online if you're interested.

Thanks again and we hope to make it back down to Santa Cruz sometime soon. Ideally before all of the whales make there way through Monterey bay, but we'll have to see.

Cheers, Jay
